NAIDOC WEEK (Part 2)
Kinder Red enjoyed interpreting different Indigenous art to make them into their own art pieces.

OPENING MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear friends,
As we come to the end of Week 6, let us continue to pray for our students preparing for the Sacrament of First Eucharist. Last weekend saw the first of our families celebrate this special occasion and during the week, all candidates attended the Retreat Day here together. This learning space also has a rich history and many of our families, past and present are represented in some of the pavers , and in particular a family that have had an incredible 44 years association with Holy Trinity School- the Eldridge family, of which this kitchen garden was dedicated to. We discovered this sign as we were refurbishing and I then did some digging into the history of this dedication. Robyn and John Eldridge had 9 children who all attended Holy Trinity Primary School. Their eldest child, Damien, started Kindergarten at Holy Trinity in 1976. He was the first of their nine children to attend Holy Trinity followed by Lana, Mark, James, Luke, Mikaela, Ashleigh, Marissa and Zac. Zac, their youngest child, had his last year at Holy Trinity in 2008. There was at least one Eldridge child at the school for 33 consecutive years. Then with a one-year break, Huon their eldest grandchild started school at Holy Trinity in 2010, with all four Apps boys - Huon, Noah, Finn and Liam attending since, from 2010 to 2020 - another 10 years of grandchildren attending Holy Trinity. Noah Apps was in the first group to attend the Holy Trinity ELC the year it opened in 2011, followed by his younger brothers.
John worked on the cleaning roster for the thirty-three years, as well as being treasurer for the PTA for a few years. For many of those years Robyn worked on the canteen, as well as helping in the classroom as a parent helper. Robyn worked for two weeks as a relief LSA at Holy Trinity, which then led to Robyn taking a new career path, and she has worked as an LSA ever since. There were many years of being involved in selling Art Union tickets, working on the school fete and the steak sandwich stall at the Canberra show. These were all major fundraising events for Holy Trinity. Robyn and John remember the days when the Sisters of Charity nuns taught at Holy Trinity. Sister Pauline was the principal when Damien began school in 1976. Other sisters they remember while their children were here, are Sister Margaret and Sister Marina.
Lana also reminded me that this garden area used to be an "Animal Learning Centre" and the school had a pet cockatoo in here during her time at HT. She also reminded me of the tradition of having a Kindergarten Ball (like a mini debut ball) where the girls wore white dresses and the boys mini suits/tux!
I cannot begin to tell you all here how proud I am of this school because of its incredible community, represented at the opening by the Eldridge family and also how grateful I am to be part of such a supportive and inclusive community. All our community, present, past and into the future, are significant members of our family here, and their contributions, whether openly recognised, or achieved quietly and consistently, are certainly appreciated and acknowledged today and always.

With every best wish for a holy and peace-filled week ahead with your beautiful families,
Philippa

First Eucharist
Congratulations to the children who received their First Eucharist over the weekend. Both Fr John and Fr James commented that the Masses were very special occasions for our parish and the families of these children. Congratulations on this every special occasion, we are so proud of you.

First Eucharist Retreat

Modelling self-kindness

This has been a tough parenting year. On a personal level it’s been challenging, but when you add the extra difficulty of helping children and young people navigate this year, you’d be forgiven for feeling like you’ve had enough.
It’s timely to look at US-based academic Dr. Brene’ Brown’s research that informed her book The Gift of Imperfect Parenting. Brown’s core finding was that the best parenting strategies rely on modelling for them to be adopted by children. That’s a little scary as it means we need to be the adults that we want to our kids to become.
There is great power in kids watching us practise how we manage hardships, frustrations and difficulties. Whether we use self-kindness or self-put downs, either will leave an impression on our kids. Not only do they see how we react when we stumble or make mistakes, but we give them permission to act in the same ways.
It’s hard to be self-kind
If you’re a goal-oriented type of person, highly-judgemental or someone who likes to get things done, then self-kindness can be difficult to befriend. It goes against the grain to laugh at your mistakes or miss a deadline, even though it won’t be the end of the world as you know it. If you recognise this type of rigid approach then it may be time let go of some old ways. Inflexibility is the enemy of healthy wellbeing, which thrives on adaptability and self-forgiveness.
Let them hear the process
Giving a child or young person insight into your thinking is a powerful parenting strategy. Sharing your struggles and mess ups with kids in age-appropriate ways takes vulnerability and promotes empathy. It takes courage to share a comment such as, “I keep putting myself down, which is not helpful. I’ve got to talk to myself as if I’m talking to someone I love.” Disclosing this type of self-talk is only useful if it’s done in a safe, matter of fact way and a child is comfortable with the message.
Self-kindness means acting compassionately toward yourself when you are struggling to meet your own expectations, meeting with unexpected difficulties and/or met with failure. It’s time to drop the stiff upper lip, put aside the strict schedule and stop berating yourself. Instead say to yourself, “This is really tough right now. How can I take some comfort and look after myself?” This is a message worth modelling particularly, if you are living with a perfectionist or a child with tendencies toward anxiety.

Dear Children, Parents, Grandparents and significant others,
All library books are due to be returned by the end of Week 7, Friday, 27th November (next week).
Please send anything back with a HT barcode. I will send out overdue notices in Week 8.
If you get an overdue notice please look extra hard for the missing books – type in the name of the book on google and see if an image helps you find the book. Come in and search for the missing book, send me an email or if all else fails pay the fine.
Warm Regards
Kate Mertz

With so many events happening this term, we have had to amend the Tuckshop roster. Please take note of the dates below that the Tuckshop will be open.
As we would normally be at the Cotter for our last day of school, (COVID is still be a party wrecker) we need 1 or 2 more volunteers to help out on what we are predicting will be a big day in the canteen. If you are available to help on Friday 18th December, can you please go to sign up genius and put your name in for this day at the following link,
