Ivy E (Year 1 White) “I can use my God given talents to help my friends in class and on the playground. I can care for my friends, and I can help them draw pictures”
The Year One students also had a visit from Constable Kenny Koala. Kenny gave us some tips about protective behaviours and other actions that help keep us safe and healthy. These included:
- When crossing the road always stop, look, listen, think then walk.
- If you get lost: stay calm, don’t wander, tell a trusted person.
- If you get lost find someone you can trust wearing a uniform like a police officer or a shop keeper.
- Wear a helmet when riding a bike, scooter or skateboard.
- Always stop and think before making a choice. Ask yourself…is it safe, healthy or kind?
Year Two- The students have been learning about positive ways they can contribute to their class this year. Here are the responses from the class brainstorms. “I can try new things even if they are challenging”, “I can communicate in a calm way” ,“I can share my ideas”, I can respect my classmates”, “I can share my strengths”.
The Year Two students individually reflected on their personal strengths. The writing piece below is from Adriana L (Year 2 Red) “I enjoyed thinking and writing about my strengths. I enjoyed learning about the strengths of other people in my class. I think we share our strengths to help other people.”
Year Three/Four- The students have been identifying and exploring the expression of emotions in social situations. They have also discussed positive ways to express their emotions in the classroom and on the playground. “We really enjoyed linking our emotions to events. Although our answers were not exactly the same, we shared similar responses” (Audrey and Lila 3/4 Red)
Year Five- The students have been exploring the links between their emotions and their behaviour. They have been focussing on our how controlling their emotions and treating their peers with kindness helps create trust and positive friendships.
Reflections from Mary B and Amelia N (Year 5 Green) “We had to think about ways we can control our emotions. We created a list of strategies that we can use when things are not going well. It was great to see the different strategies our classmates use when they need to calm down.”
Year Six- Reflection from Gwen O (Year 6 Red) “We have been learning about “Empathy” and how this is linked to social and emotional learning. Understanding the different emotions and being able to read the body language of your peers is an important life skill. We understand that reading the emotions of others, helps us become better leaders. If we see students who are upset, embarrassed, angry, frustrated or anxious, we can apply our empathy skills and support them in a comforting and nurturing way. We have been acting out different emotions and discussing what to do when we see students show these emotions at school.”
I hope you enjoyed viewing the social and emotional learning that is happening at Holy Trinity. We will be sharing this with our community Week 4 and Week 9 of every term.
Kind Regards
