Opening Message From Assistant Principal
Dear Community of Holy Trinity,
The readings this weekend also encourage us to choose Christ always. At times when we come to the crossroad of life, we become confused because we need to make choices that will make or mar our future.
ALL THINGS PYP
At Holy Trinity Primary School we have a rich cultural heritage.
Earlier this year we sought information from our families on the diverse nature of the cultural heritages within our community. We are now proud to fly the flags of all these countries that represent our community.
A warm ‘welcome’ in all the languages representative of our school is also proudly front and centre as you enter our school. This display builds a sense of belonging for all our students and families.
If you haven’t seen either of these display in our school, we encourage you to pop in soon. They are both truly spectacular.
Exhibition
The Year 6 Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) student. The Exhibition is a chance for students to share their learning with the whole school community.
The Exhibition is a culmination experience, which presents the opportunity for students to exhibit all the elements of the PYP; Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, Concepts and Action. Within these elements we strive to develop our students into internationally minded, life-long learners.
Our Year 6 (Year 5 students undertake a mini exhibition) will commence working on a variety of aspects of the Exhibition in Week 7, and will continue to delve further into their inquiries into Term 4. We will celebrate Exhibition on Wednesday 14th November.
This years transdisciplinary theme is Where we are in Place and Time: An exploration of our orientation in place and time; of our personal histories and geographies; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilisations, from local and global perspectives.
We encourage any member of our community who may have first-hand knowledge of migration, exploration, technological advancement or whom work within the field to contact us if you would feel that you could add to this Unit of Inquiry. Please email Katie.

Parish School Mass
This Saturday 6pm is our Parish School Mass. This is also a presentation Mass for our First Eucharist Candidates, a reminder to our 3/4 families who are preparing supper to be shared after Mass. We look forward to seeing many of our families there.
Father's Day
A reminder to continue bringing in gifts for our Father's Day stall. We are still in need of many gifts so that all Dad's can be catered for!

Student Voice
Next week some year 5/6 students will be attending the Plenary 2020 Student Voice, held by the Archbishop. This will be a great day with students from schools across the Archdiocese gathering to discuss the question 'What is God asking of us today in Australia?

How empathy transforms your child’s well-being

When I called my mum in tears the other day about an overwhelming disappointment she said exactly what I needed to hear; “that really stinks.”
With those three words I felt her empathy.
When our own kids cry and share their upsets and disappointments it can tear at our heartstrings. Sometimes we just want to cry with them.
There are also those times when our kids get upset and it wears on our patience. It’s easy to react with “well, I’ve told you before…’ or “how many times …?” or “if only…”
Don’t let frustration get the better of you
It’s completely normal for us as parents to feel frustrated, even if our kids are upset, and wonder when the lessons will be learned. And it’s completely fair to have those conversations….again. But before we do that, there’s a handful of words that we need to share. A handful of words that, when shared with sincerity, can have the most powerful impact on the emotional health and happiness of our kids over their lifetime.
The words? They’re the ones that deliver a message of warmth and empathy. Empathy can change the nature of our family relationships, boost our kids’ mental health, develop their emotional intelligence and promote warmer healthier, and even less violent, relationships for our kids as young adults. Kids with more empathetic parents are less aggressive, experience less depression, develop greater emotional intelligence (a predictor of success) and grow up to be more empathetic themselves.
Empathy is defined as experiencing emotions of concern at the suffering of others and adopting the perspective of another. It’s different to sympathy which is feeling sorry for someone. It’s about demonstrating our concern and letting our kids know we get it. That we feel it too.
We can show empathy by saying things like:
“I get it.”
“I hear you.”
“Ahh, I can see that you’re feeling…..”
“That stinks.”
“I understand.”
For great impact use the right emotional response
Pairing your words with a matched emotional response, love, comfort, warmth and a willingness to sit with them as they express their emotions shows our kids we get it and validates for them that they have every right to feel the way they do. After all, there’s no such thing as wrong feelings. We can’t help how we feel about the things that happen to us, neither can our kids. We don’t need to agree with how they feel, nor do we have to view their reaction as a reasonable response to what’s happened. Validation is an important step in our response to our kids when they’re upset, distressed or anxious. It’s all about showing our kids that their message has been received, and that they have a soft place to land. The conversations can come later.

- A reminder that dogs are not allowed to be on school grounds whilst children are in attendance.
- WWVP Cards- for any one volunteering or working on the school grounds, they must give the front office a copy of their current WWVP card. Please note that you must also have this with you, in case we are audited. If staff or volunteers do not have their WWVP card on the to produce, individual fines and fine for the school in the $1000s can be issued.
- SIGN IN- our new electronic sign in at the front office desk is now going to be used for Student sign in and out, rather than using the white slips. Please ensure you always sign your child/ren in and an out if you are arriving late, attending an appointment, or leaving early.

Art and Craft Session 2 for parents – tonight, Thursday 23rd August
South Western Athletics Carnival
On Thursday 6th September a number of athletes will represent our school at the South Western Athletics Carnival. Nominees will be notified tomorrow with a note and permission forms can be found on szapp from tomorrow.
Dance
For the past 5 weeks the ELC Kinder, Year 2 and 5/6 have participated in dance lessons from the talented teacher Jan Simpson. From next week Year 1, and 3/4. Year 5/6 will continue to have the assistance of Jan for their upcoming Exhibition. Please note dance lessons will occur on Fridays for week 5, 7, 9 and 10. Dance will occur on Tuesdays for weeks 6 and 8, during these weeks Year 1 and 3/4 will be required to wear their sports uniform on Tuesdays as well as their regular sports days.

Each week we are going to have some fun problem solving questions for the students in the newsletter. We are hoping to increase the students understanding and knowledge when working with open ended/problem solving questions. Feel free to support your child through the process. Please email me your child’s answers and we can share their achievements each week in the newsletter.

Week 5 Maths Problems
Lower:
Miss Welfare owns 10 cars and a very large garage. If she can see 3 cars parked outside her garage, how many cars are inside? How many different ways can she park her cars inside and outside her garage? Draw a picture to show your working out.
Middle:
Rosie and Tess have agreed to work for 8 days to help their parents over the holidays. The pay they get will vary. Rosie will get $10 for the first day she works and an extra $1 every day she works after that(eg. Day 1=$10, day 2=$11, Day 3=$12 etc). Tess will get $1 for the first day she works, but for each day she works from then on, her pay will be doubled. Who would you rather be and why?
Upper:
Mrs Brearley has ten tiles with one of the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 on each of them. She plays around and discovers that she can make some addition sums like the one below.
What’s more, the four numbers on the tiles in the answer to the sum (the numbers in the bottom row), add up to 9.

Audrey Day (Black Cockatoos ELC) had two open heart surgeries before she was three months old. Please join Audrey and her family at the annual HeartKids Two Feet and a Heartbeat 4km charity walk (in honour of the four lives lost to congenital heat disease every week in Australia).
