Welcome Message from the Principal
Dear Friends,
Last week I attended a Principal Conference and Retreat with all the Principals from our Diocese and senior leaders in Catholic Education. Thursday and Friday were facilitated with Professor Br David Hall, who spent much time reflecting on leading learning and mission today in Catholic Schools. I spent valuable time reflecting on the need for schooling as well as focusing on learning, to recognise the necessity to develop humanity, building Jesus' mission of love. We are not human beings on a spiritual journey, we are spiritual beings on a human journey. That journey centres on the compassion of Jesus Christ, and being in relationship with Jesus is transforming. I hope that we all give time to think about the compassion of Jesus during this season of Lent and to continue to develop a relationship with Christ.
Jesus is no longer where He was, He is where we are.
Last Friday we celebrated our first Awards assembly for 2020. Three awards were presented to members of each class- Faith, Hope and Love award, Academic Achievement award and a Consistent Effort award. The recipients of these awards are published in the newsletter today.

By the end of this week, all families should have received an interim report, describing how your child is developing in approaches to learning skills and also included their learning goal for this term. I encourage you to talk to them about this identified goal and the support they need to help achieve this.
On the 2nd and 3rd of March, Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, released an online survey to better understand your opinion of the value Catholic schools like ours provide and what that means for you and your children. This was sent via email and should take less than 15 minutes to complete. The findings of this research will be used by Catholic Education to improve the offering of Catholic schools. Please note that Catholic Education has engaged JWSS Research to host the survey, collect the data and analyse the results. JWSS Research is an independent, fully accredited, Australian research agency (see wwwjwsresearchh.com for further information). Survey results will be reported in the aggregate with individual responses remaining completely confidential and treated in accordance with the relevant privacy laws, including the Market and Social Research Privacy Principles and the industry’s code of professional behaviour. I encourage all parents to respond to the survey and thank you in advance for your time and participation in this.
Today I have participated in a long meeting re the latest updates on the Corona virus. Catholic Education has set up an emergency response team that will keep us informed with information and decisions. Tomorrow I will send home details around this to all families. I encourage parents to ensure the front office has up to date contacts for every family, particularly email addresses.
Thank you also to those parents who have volunteered to help with our first school working bee tomorrow afternoon. We will be needing help with the following jobs:
- painting of the new bollards in the car park
- planting and mulching out the front of the school
- work in the Kitchen Garden
- ELC jobs such as outside window cleaning, turning the sandpit and cleaning around the playground
It is not too late to come and join us from 3:30pm for a couple of hours. You and your family will be rewarded with some sausages and refreshments at the end! If you are also able to bring gardening tools, wheelbarrows, etc, that would be most appreciated, thank you.
Unfortunately we have already had an incident with the car park dropping off in the morning. Please be careful with children and families walking across the crossing, after parking their car. I know we can sometimes be running late, however this should never jeopardise the safety of others.
Finally on this Saturday night at 6pm Mass, parents of our Reconciliation candidates will be presenting their child to the Parish. This will be followed with supper, hosted by our 5 /6 families. I hope to see many of our families there together to support and pray for our children as they prepare for this Sacrament.
With every best wish for a holy and peace-filled week ahead with your beautiful families,
Philippa
Project Compassion
As we journey through Lent we are called to have a change of heart and spend more time in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. When we think of almsgiving we often think of giving physically with donations of money or food to those less fortunate than us. As a Holy Trinity community, we are currently raising money for Project Compassion. Project Compassion works with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice.
Parish/School Mass, Presentation of Reconciliation Candidates
This Saturday, 14th March we will be having our first Parish/School Mass for 2020. During the Mass, the candidates for Reconciliation will be presented to the community. I invite all members of the community to join us at this Mass as we acknowledge these candidates and the progression they’ve made on their faith journey. Thank you to our 5/6 families who are providing supper for our community.
Harmony Day 2020
Holy Trinity will be celebrating Harmony Day next Friday, 20 March 2020 (Week 7).
Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
To recognise and celebrate the many cultures that we have at Holy Trinity, students are invited to come to school on Friday 20 March 2020 dressed in traditional dress or to wear a piece of orange clothing (for example: orange t-shirt, orange hair ribbon etc.).

Going beyond the fishbowl

It’s a quirk of nature that the extent of our growth is determined by our immediate environment. For instance, a fearsome shark will only grow five centimetres long if it spends all its life in a fish bowl. Put that shark in the sea and will grow to five metres or more. A shark’s genes may provide the blueprint, but its growth will be restricted by the size of its immediate environment.
The same principle applies to children. Restrict them to a safe, insular environment and their capacity for reaching their full potential will be limited. Getting kids to go beyond the fishbowl and be part of the wider world is how we prepare them for the career-fluid future that awaits them.
Recently, I wrote a foreword for a soon to be released parenting book written by South African authors Nikki Bush and Graeme Codrington titled “Future proof your child for the 2020s and beyond”. The authors described the future that our children are entering as full of exponential and disruptive change led by technology and shifting social mores. They reasoned that in the world of work and enterprise that awaits today’s generation of children and young people, creativity, problem-solving, design, big picture thinking and risk-taking will be richly rewarded. According to Bush and Codrington, the future will belong to the kids who are going beyond the fishbowl, willing to expand their physical and mental horizons.
American parenting icon Lenore Skenazy, founder of the free-range parenting movement is a long-time advocate for parents giving kids the freedom they need to explore their neighbourhoods and take safe risks.
Dubbed ”America’s Worst Mom” for allowing her nine-year old son to ride the New York subway on his own in 2008, Skenazy has been an outspoken advocate for allowing kids more freedom and unsupervised time. She maintains that kids are “safer and smarter than our culture believes.” Like Bush and Codrington, Skenazy encourages parents to allow kids to jump out the fishbowl of school, family and their immediate neighbourhood and encourage them to explore their capabilities in the wider world. She acknowledges that allowing kids the same type of freedoms that previous generations enjoyed takes significant parental courage.
If kids are to be truly resilient and make the most of the exciting but uncertain future that awaits them, it’s more important than ever to loosen the reins so that both generations – children and parents- experience more freedom.

Dear volunteers,
Thank you for volunteering for the vaccum team roster for Holy Trinity school. Due to your generosity of time and effort the school cleaning costs can be reduced, freeing up more resources for our children.
This year we have formed 10 teams of five or six members, which will mean most teams will do a shift once a term over the school year. And there is plenty of scope for each team to respond to people who are unavailable for whatever reason.
Team leaders are marked in bold at the top of each team. I have confirmed availability with each leader.
Your task as team leader:
- Put cleaning dates into your calendar
- If there is any significant problem with the dates you have been given please get in touch with Paul Osborne as soon as possible 0407 519 473
- Distribute the dates to your team members (dates will be emailed to you and published the week before in the school newsletter)
- Prior to your cleaning night, contact all team members to confirm their availability. If you cannot muster at least four members, please contact Paul Osborne on 0407 519 473.
- Collect the school key from the front office on the Wednesday morning of your shift (or whenever it is convenient for you). Details of the alarm system are located in the key bag.
- Set a time to meet at the school. Ideally this should be between 6.30 and 7pm on your rostered Wednesday. Some groups have found it easier to start earlier or later than this, but use your own judgment.
- Vacuum cleaners are located in the middle ‘garage door’ storage unit near the tuckshop. There are plenty of power points in classrooms and hallways.
- Clean all areas, minus the assembly hall and administration office spaces. The annexe and ELC should also be vacuumed.
- Please check the functioning of vacuum cleaners before you leave. If there are any obvious problems with them please get in touch with the front office (Beulah, Penny or Catherine)
Please contact Paul Osborne if you have any query about the roster.
If the work date for your team causes any difficulties, in the first instance try to swap with another team leader.
If this is not possible, contact Paul Osborne 0407 519 473.
Thanks for your support
Paul Osborne
