ANZAC Day

Last Friday, Holy Trinity Primary School commemorated ANZAC day. We were fortunate enough to be joined by many defence members of our school community who have or still are currently serving. Following our commemoration, Gerard Hogan, a parishioner in our community offered his time to come and teach the students the role of the light horse during WW1.

Gerard had been working with his horse ‘Miss Colombia’ for several weeks leading up to our ANZAC day commemoration to ensure she would be comfortable around the children. Gerard bought many items from WW1 to show the students how they have changed over time. He showed the students how the soldiers would saddle up, put a nosebag on and open a haversack with items to show how the solider and horse lived in the field.

All students from ELC to Year 6 loved meeting Gerard and Miss Colombia as well as members from Fred Wards!

Here is what some of our students had to say:

• I liked learning about the saddle – Violet (Kinder)
• It was interesting to see how the soldiers had to change the horse’s shoes – Mila (Kinder)
• I like holding the bullets from the war, they were very heavy – Will (Kinder)
• It was interesting to learn what the soldiers used to eat – Ana (Year 1)
• I learnt that in WW1 they didn’t have transport like we have today. It was all with horses! – Arthur (Year 1)
• I liked seeing how things had changed from WW1 – we are very modern now! – Audrey (Year 3/4)
• I loved seeing the horse up close and learning how the soldiers looked after the horses – Ruby TL (Year 5/6)
