Book Week Continues..
Last Friday, Years 4, 5 and 6 had a surprise visit from illustrator Jon Sommariva (family friend of Sage and Molly W). Jon was the illustrator of the CBCA 2023 Winning Book in the Young Reader section of Book Week entitled, Neverlanders.
Jon kept the classes and staff engaged for 40 minutes while he told us all about the Neverlanders plot and his role as the illustrator. Jon has worked as an illustrator on many famous comics including Teenage Age Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spiderman, and many Avenger characters.
After answering loads of questions Jon drew for us a large picture of Grace, one of favourite his characters from Neverlanders. Jon also pointed out that in some of the pictures in Neverlanders he has included references to Canberra – such as postcodes and action bus driver uniforms.
We all really appreciated Jons’ pop in visit, and thanks to Molly and Sage’s mum for making this happen. I think Canberra sold out of Neverlanders last weekend! It is a great read, the kids were hooked.

HT Year 5 Book Club…
For the past 7 weeks Pia, Emily, Molly, Amelia, and Elsa have been using Friday Book Club sessions to read through the Picture book section of the CBCA shortlisted books and be involved in the 2023 Shadow Judging project. The girls had a criteria to follow to select their preference for the 2023 Winning Book. They selected Farmhouse by Sophie Blackall. After selecting Farmhouse, they then had to complete something artistic to represent this book. The girls decided to use an old dolls house and turned it into a scene from the book.
The Book Club Gang also held Kinder and Year 1 lunchtime Book Club for two weeks during Book Week – the little kids loved it, as did the Book Club Gang.
The girls and I celebrated their hard work with donuts and milkshakes at the Curtin shops.

Kate and Jol Temple author visit…
Yesterday we were lucky enough to have the very popular Kate and Jol Temple visit our school and spend three sessions with us. They were fabulous, very engaging and entertaining.
The classes unpacked the Bin Chicken books, were introduced to newly released books, clapped, cheered, read snippets from the Underdog series, discussed the background to Kate’s new chapter books, asked wonderful questions and were all perfectly behaved.
Happy Days,
Kate Mertz
