God of life ,
our prayers today are where our hearts and minds
have been during these last days
and where they have been drawn so early in this season;
with those communities and individuals
whose lives have been damaged
in differing ways by the bushfires.
We pray for all those who have been affected;
for the families and friends of those who have been killed.
We pray for those who are missing,
for their safety, for the fears of those who love them;
bring each one home safe, we pray.
We pray for those who have been injured and survived:
for physical and emotional trauma;
for the fear and helplessness experienced;
for the anger and frustration at the injustice
of unavoidable disaster.
Amen
Dear Friends,
It is an absolute pleasure to begin our newsletter today with a reflection from our Year 5 /6 teachers and some Year 6 students about Holy Trinity 2019 Exhibition presented to our school and community last week. Our sister school, Trinity School at Murrumburrah, also brought some Year 3-6 students over during the day presentation to share in this experience. What a wonderful and in-depth celebration of learning!
Our PYP Exhibition has been an opportunity for our Year 6 students (Year 5 participated in a mini version) to inquire into global issues and any positive action they can take as global citizens. The students used the UN Sustainable Development Goals to frame their inquires and created a variety of interactive learning experiences to provoke thought and questioning within our community. The students were also able to express themselves creatively through 3D data, artworks, drama and dance.
We had opportunities to research deeper into a range of many issues. It gave us a chance to think outside the box. Our dance and drama really conveyed a message about what we were learning and what action we should take. It is definitely something we look forward to in Year 6. I think all schools should participate in Exhibition as it gives us students more opportunities to speak out about issues we feel strongly about. (Abby VB- Year 6 )
Exhibition is a great opportunity to collaborate with others around the issues relating to the United Nations goals. Dance and drama put the message out to our community that people can take action no matter who they are or what they believe in. (Ruby Ashton- Year 6)
Exhibition was pretty good. There were a lot of tasks happening and for anyone who does Exhibition they need to remember to be organised, think about priorities and what further research you can do at home to get on top of your work. (Oscar H- Year 6)
Exhibition was great! It was changed up this year where we could work in a group and create an interactive experience. My advice would be to do extra work in your holidays to make Exhibition easier to handle. (Daniel B-Year 6)
Over the last few months we have watched our Year 5 and 6 students inquire, collaborate, research, take risks, challenge their thinking and time management skills and reflect on the many facets of global action and how this can lead to a sustainable future. And what an honour and inspiration it has been to watch the growth, perseverance, care and reflective insights gained in all our students during this personal inquiry- the culmination in many ways of their entire PYP journey here at Holy Trinity over the years.
There was much excitement from both teachers and students during Exhibition preparation as it is a true inquiry and a model for all teacher to emulate in their classrooms. During Exhibition, we saw how hard our students worked, but so did their teachers and PYP coordinators- Katie Smith, Brendon Pye, Rebecca Casey, Heidi White, Simon Bugden, Kate Lategui. Students were also supported by our specialist teachers: Antonija Rover, Kate Mertz and Tiffany Fletcher. We were grateful for the efforts of Jann Simpson, Paul Durham and Meg Millband with the Drama and Dance pieces. Our staff as mentors also had a great role as lifelong learners, guiding and supporting the Year 6 students in this space.
A special thank you to Maria Gagetti who spent many hours at our school with each Year 6 student, designing their individual pages for the Exhibition Magazine that each child received last week. This is such a wonderful momento for the Year 6 students and their families and I sincerely thank Maria for all the time she gave to this and especially her generosity in designing and financing the publication of these books for each child.
With every best wish for a holy and peace-filled week ahead with your beautiful families,
Philippa
