Welcome Message from the Principal
Jesus himself stood
among them and
said to them,
‘Peace be with
you!’
Lk 24:36
Dear Friends,
Last Friday we joined together to commemorate ANZAC Day and the significance such a day as this means to us in 2021. I was so grateful for all our parents who serve ,that were able to be present and participate in the Prayer Celebration. I was particularly touched with the reflection that Major Niki Maple (Geoffrey Year 6) shared with us at the end of her ANZAC Day explanation as follows:
My family has given three generations of service to Australia with my grandfather serving in WWII, fighting against the Japanese in Papua New Guinea, my father serving in the Vietnam War, fighting against the North Vietnamese Army and myself, whilst not serving in a conflict, deployed to Egypt on a peacekeeping mission in 2013. Interestingly, although my grandfather fought against the Japanese, my sisters and I while at high school all studied Japanese, and had Japanese exchange students live with our family, as well as going to Japan on exchange ourselves. And again, despite my father fighting against the Vietnamese, the Army sent me to live in Vietnam, learn the Vietnamese language and work with the Vietnamese Army.
The key thing to remember from these examples is that although we may have had a disagreement with someone yesterday or today, that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends tomorrow. While it is important to remember the past, we shouldn’t live in the past.
The enrolment period for the 2022 school year will begin next Monday, 3 May and closes on Friday 28 May.
If you have a child who attends Preschool or who attends the Holy Trinity ELC, please note that you will still need to complete the online enrolment form for your child to attend Holy Trinity Primary School.

Holy Trinity Open Day Sessions
The 2021 Open School Sessions for both the Primary School and theELCC will be:
Open Day Tuesday 4th May - 9:30am - 11:00am
Open Evening Wednesday 5th May - 5:00pm - 6:00pm
Open Day Tuesday 11th May - 9:30am - 11:00am
It is always a privilege to welcome prospective families into our School and ELC in May each year. I always love to talk about all the opportunities given to our students and community that I feel incredibly proud of, and grateful for. It is also wonderful watching our Year 6 leaders take families on tours and listen to all the aspects of life at Holy Trinity that they love too. Last Wednesday night at our parent meeting, I was given the opportunity again to share with families significant reasons that make Holy Trinity the best choice for families looking at a Catholic coeducational school from ELC to Year 6. We had many ex- students return for the evening and give some proud testimonials about how being a student at Holy Trinity to Year 6 has enabled them such broad experiences, and given them great skills that have helped positively transition them into high school. We will share more about this evening over the next two weeks in our newsletters and on our school website.
As mentioned in a message sent out earlier today, we have been notified by ACT Sport and Recreation that there is misunderstanding and a double booking at the Athletics Track at Woden for tomorrow. Thus we are unable to host our Athletics carnival at this venue tomorrow. We have now been able to secure a booking at the Athletics Park for Friday 14th of May. I sincerely apologise for this inconvenience. We will send out another permission note early next week for the 14th of May. Because of this postponement, the school tuck shop will now be open tomorrow and Qkr is now open for tomorrow's lunch ordering.
Congratulations to Danjela Johnson (Ameila 2W) who has recently had a baby boy, Jake! Please keep the Bayada family in your prayers (Mary 3 /4B and Henry 1G) as Alana's father passed away recently.
With every best wish for a holy and peace-filled week ahead with your beautiful families. Enjoy this glorious autumn weather!

ANZAC Day
Last Friday, Holy Trinity Primary School commemorated ANZAC day. We were fortunate enough to be joined by many defence members of our school community who have or still are currently serving. Following our commemoration, Gerard Hogan, a parishioner in our community offered his time to come and teach the students the role of the light horse during WW1.
Gerard had been working with his horse ‘Miss Colombia’ for several weeks leading up to our ANZAC day commemoration to ensure she would be comfortable around the children. Gerard bought many items from WW1 to show the students how they have changed over time. He showed the students how the soldiers would saddle up, put a nosebag on and open a haversack with items to show how the solider and horse lived in the field.
All students from ELC to Year 6 loved meeting Gerard and Miss Colombia as well as members from Fred Wards!
Here is what some of our students had to say:
- I liked learning about the saddle – Violet (Kinder)
- It was interesting to see how the soldiers had to change the horse’s shoes – Mila (Kinder)
- I like holding the bullets from the war, they were very heavy – Will (Kinder)
- It was interesting to learn what the soldiers used to eat – Ana (Year 1)
- I learnt that in WW1 they didn’t have transport like we have today. It was all with horses! – Arthur (Year 1)
- I liked seeing how things had changed from WW1 – we are very modern now! – Audrey (Year 3/4)
- I loved seeing the horse up close and learning how the soldiers looked after the horses – Ruby TL (Year 5/6)

Teaching consent to children and teenagers

Following the March 4 Justice rallies families have been urged to talk to their children about consent. Many parents are unsure where to start and how to go about it. Here are some ideas to assist parents in this most important topic.
Start the consent ball rolling from an early age
Consent education begins with adults teaching and modelling respectful treatment related to children’s development stages. Holding discussions about body boundaries, checking in with feelings, respecting the feelings and voices of others, and listening to children’s concerns are the types of behaviours that will help you develop a culture of respect in your family.
Is your home a place where children can talk about any topic? Sexuality and relationship education are subjects that many parents place in the ‘let’s talk about this when you are older’ basket.
Professor Kerry Robinson, who is in the School of Social Sciences and Psychology and the Sexualities and Genders Research Network at Western Sydney University advises parents to be factual when answering children’s questions, emphasising the importance of staying informed about the subject kids are interested in.
In a recent article in The Guardian, she said “…. have set it up early with your child that when they talk about certain things you give open, simple, honest answers, then you set a precedent that you can build on.”
Professor Robinson also advises parents not to fob off children’s questions: “Straight away you’re setting a pattern of not answering and putting it off. Kids learn really quickly that this is a taboo subject. They will talk to their friends about it: they won’t talk to their parents and other adults about it because it’s taboo.”
Teach no means no
Children learn about mutual consent through their play and sharing. A child who doesn’t want to share their toys has a right to be left alone, rather than being scolded to change their mind. A parent who withdraws a privilege in response to a teenager’s poor behaviour shouldn’t be subjected to repeated attempts to negotiate a different outcome. Reinforce with children and young people that a no is not an invitation to ask again.
Emphasise choices
The biggest lesson to reinforce for children and young people is that they have a choice in how they behave, and how they react. The young person who blames alcohol for sexual assault has neglected the role that choice plays in their decisions. Blaming alcohol, the dress or the demeanour of another person are older versions of ‘it’s not my fault because he/she made me do it’ that children so often use when asked to account for poor behaviour.
Framing behaviour as a choice is a central consent strategy for children or all ages. A young child who shares a toy with a friend can be told, “Good choice Harry. Now you can have fun together.” A primary school child who completes their homework assignment early can be reminded “Now you’ve got plenty of time to relax. Smart choice.” The teenager who quietly helps you prepare a meal can be told, “You could have done anything after school, but you chose to help me. I appreciate that.”
Teach kids to seek consent
While teaching kids the right to say no is a central consent message, children and young people should also develop the habit of seeking consent from others. “Ask your sister if it’s okay for you to play that game next to her.” “Ask grandma if she feels like a cuddle right now.” Permission-seeking is another piece in respectful relationships puzzle that you can reinforce with kids.
Model consent
The use of consensual language is a community concern. A grandparent may need to be respectfully reminded to ask young children if they’d like a kiss or hug. Similarly, a relative should abide by a young child’s wishes if they ask them to stop tickling or playing with them. A doctor should ask a child, “I’m going to take your temperature. Is that okay?” It’s up to adults to frame requests in ways that children feel safe and comfortable.
Fathers step up
Dads can’t leave consent and sexuality education to mothers, which still appears to be the case in many families. Fathers can help their daughters develop the confidence to say no by regular interactions with their daughters and encouraging them to be assertive. If they feel comfortable telling you to stop a game, they are more likely to feel comfortable saying no to other males in their lives later in life. Open the door to conversations about sexuality, relationships and consent with your teenage daughter, and she’ll know she has a willing ally in you.
Fathers can model respectful behaviours for their sons through their treatment of women at home, and in the community at large. Start the by calling out displays of derogatory behaviour towards women by men or young people. Reinforce in your sons that they the standard of behaviour they ignore is the standard of behaviour that they accept. There are many powerful lessons that boys can absorb from their fathers.
In closing
The best age to start teaching your children about consent is when they are young. The second-best age is whatever age they are right now. Consent education is too big an issue to ignore or leave to schools to manage. It’s something we all have to commit to if we want real change to occur.

Mother's Day stall is coming!
The Holy Trinity Mothers’ Day stall will be held this year on Friday 7th May. For those not familiar with the stall the idea is that each child gets to ‘buy’ a gift for their Mum.
To make things easier for families this year, the P&F will procure all the gifts for the stall. We ask you to contribute $5 per child via Qkr which goes towards the cost of the gifts and a donation to the L'Archce Foundation. Every year the Mother’s Day stall donates all profits to this terrific local charity, who provide people with intellectual disabilities the support they need to lead fulfilling and empowered lives.
We understand some families in our community might be experiencing financial hardship and we want to assure those families that all children will be invited to participate in the Mother’s Day stall irrespective of payment. No child will be excluded.
If you are in a position to donate a ‘gift’ to support a less fortunate family in our community, we would be thrilled - it’s as easy as making an additional contribution via Qkr.
Also, on the day we require a number of Father helpers to assist with the stall between 8.30am – 11.00am.
Please call or text Mark Bauer on 0413 759 692 if you can assist.
